About our female owned and operated business

OUR BRAND

BeesButter is a line of natural skincare handmade in small batches in Toronto, Ontario. BeesButter uses local beeswax and sources pure and natural ingredients as close to home as possible.

We are on a mission to provide sustainable skincare that is eco-friendly and plastic free. Made with a short list of ingredients that you can actually pronounce, you can feel good about what you are putting on your skin and your environmental impact.

OUR STORY

The story of BeesButter begins on the Big Island of Hawaii where founder Dorothy Saulewicz joined a volunteer program after finishing teacher's college at UofT.

Immersed in nature and holistic living, Dorothy witnessed firsthand the medicinal benefits of wholesome ingredients with minimal processing. Dorothy learned the recipe of the Coconut Body Balm which became the foundation of BeesButter Canada.

Upon returning to Toronto, Dorothy continued her career in outdoor education taking students on canoe and hiking trips in the Canadian wilderness. All the while, BeesButter continued to grow and in 2016, the business was established in the ethos of natural ingredients, sustainable packaging and honouring nature.

OUR PROCESS

We source our beeswax from a small family farm in Mulmur, Ontario. All other ingredients are sourced as close to home as possible including our packaging which is eco-friendly and plastic free. Every product is handmade in our Toronto Studio.

  • Our products are considered "Made in Canada." Although we use local beeswax that is a product of Canada, many of our oils like apricot and jojoba are from Spain and Turkey. Our rose petals and dried botanicals are from Canada and some oils like broccoli seed and various essential oils are a product of Canada. Our labels are from Canada and our bottles and jars are sourced from Canadian companies, but they are likely manufactured in China or India.

Unfortunately, Canada does not manufacture many glass bottles anymore and oils are even more challenging since we live in a cold climate. One of our favourite oils is coconut oil and we simply cannot get there here. We try to source Canadian whenever possible.

All of our products are handmade in Toronto, Ontario and our proceeds stay in the local economy. We love supporting farmer's markets and other artisanal brands. We are a small female owned and operated brand.

#TheGoodTribe Interview

“Generally, I avoid any ingredients that I cannot pronounce. However, this rule of thumb is not always fair because, by law, labels on cosmetics have to use the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI). This often requires the Latin words for common ingredients and can be difficult to understand. I would avoid the following ingredients…”
